Rats Got My Cake! Beanie
Rats Got My Cake! is a little rat hauling a cupcake twice his size, inspired by a real rat dragging a muffin across the Chicago subway tracks. Loved, hated, and very hungry.
Here it's a FLYN patch on our most popular beanie: a soft acrylic knit with an adjustable cuff, in more colors than we can count. Patched by hand in our Westbrook, Maine studio.

How It's Made
It all starts with a painting.
Every FLYN hat begins with an original painting created by Flyn. The paintings are the heart of what we do - they are where every color, shape and idea begins. We have the artwork turned into patches, and then we sew each patch onto the hats ourselves. What starts as an original painting becomes something you can wear.
Materials
- 100% acrylic
- Heather Grey: 62/38 acrylic/polyester
- All other heather colors: 50/50 acrylic/polyester
Care
Most FLYN hats are best cleaned by hand.
Fill a sink or bowl with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent.
Gently scrub dirty areas with a soft cloth or tooth brush.
Rinse thoroughly with cool water. Gently reshape the hat and let it air dry. If you want it to form to your head let it dry on the noggin.
Keep it out of the dryer and away from high heat.
Never put your FLYN hat in the washing machine or dryer. A little extra care will keep your hat looking great for years to come.

Behind the Design
Rats Got My Cake!
A little rat pulling a cupcake twice his size.
I saw a scene very much like this when I was in art school in Chicago - a rat pulling a muffin twice his size across the subway tracks. I had always had a hard time with rats but watching him work so hard to drag that muffin along made me see him differently.
There was something unexpectedly endearing about it.
That moment stayed with me and eventually became this painting.
Our Story
About Us
FLYN is an art-driven company built around a love of animals and a fascination with the wild, weird, beautiful, and unexpected things about them.
This is the second beanie I’ve bought they bring me much joy and delight.
We were visiting Portland in 2022 when my husband proposed! He found his treasured squirrel with a lollipop hat at a local shop, but at the time none of the hats spoke to me. I was so thrilled when I came online and saw this little rat hat! I never wear hats, but this has been my favorite for the chilly Wisconsin weather.
Bought it at the Christmas market in Boston and have worn it every cold day since. It’s comfortable. Keeps me warm. And who doesn’t love a rat stealing a cupcake.
