Collection: Great Blue Heron Fishin'

This painting is based on one of my favorite birds - the Great Blue Heron. I'm always drawn to their strange proportions: the huge, pointed beak, impossibly long neck, and the way their feathers seem to go from perfectly neat to completely wild.

I also love the way they fish. Great blue herons have specialized features and fine plumage that can help create less visible more effective conditions while hunting - a little bit like nature gave them their own secret advantage.

There is something almost prehistoric about them. They are big, awkward, beautiful, and completely still until suddenly they aren't. This painting started with my fascination with all of those details and became one more attempt to capture the weirdness and beauty of one of my favorite birds.

Like all FLYN designs, this image started as an original painting before becoming part of the collection.
